Arc Fault Diagnosis

Understanding the detection mechanism and recovery procedure for DC arc events.

Introduction

The arc fault detection system is a critical safety feature of the SunHopper®-D. This system continuously verifies that no electrical arcs are present on the DC lines of the PV system.

An arc occurs when a damaged cable or connector makes partial connection, creating a high-heat bridge. This presents a fire hazard, requiring the inverter to shut down immediately to extinguish the arc.

If an arc is detected, the system disables the inverter and displays a fault message. Up to 5 automatic retries are attempted within 24 hours. After 5 faults in a single day, a manual reset is required for safety.

Troubleshooting Steps

Physical Inspection

1 Verify PV input terminals are tight.
2 Check all connectors at the panels.
3 Inspect cables for insulation damage.
4 Ensure cables are stripped to correct length.

False Failure Checks

1 Check for shared conduits with AC lines.
2 Verify no adjacent "noisy" inverters.
3 Check proximity to radio equipment.
4 Ensure correct grounding of array frame.
